13. CIVILIZATIONAL CONFRONTATION

Declaration to Radio Baghdad * (1)

It is a signal honor for me, as a militant and an intellectual from the Arab world and, by extension, the Third World, to receive this telephone call from Radio-Baghdad at a historic moment in which a country is struggling for survival.

Notwithstanding the problems it is facing, Radio-Baghdad has endeavoured to establish contact with Rabat from Baghdad. This attests to the existence of a tangible entity, called the Arab-Islamic Nation. Hence the outstanding nature of this privilege which is being bestowed on me.

Everybody knows that, whether in Morocco, the Maghreb, the Arab World, Africa or the Third World, we all stand by the struggling Iraqi people. The Iraqi people is bravely fighting, all by itself, the civilizational hegemony of the North at the cost of tens of thousands of martyrs.

I have said and written on many an occasion since September 12th, 1990 that what is taking place in the Gulf was not only a political, economic or military conflict, but above all, a cultural confrontation.

Being a researcher in the prospective field, I have never ceased, for 15 years now, to warn the West against its socio-cultural ethnocentrism and the dangers it involved on the eve of the 21st century. In fact, the war which has already begun is the real first world war. It is from Baghdad that, with the will of God, the liberation process will have begun for the 4.2 billion inhabitants of the Third World, including 1.3 billion Muslims.

The coming generations will recognize the historic role played by Iraq today. Iraq, the heir to an ancient civilization, is facing a "world" power whose cultural history hardly exceeds 200 years, a fact which seems to explain the barbarity with which technology is being wielded for massive destruction purposes. All I can say is to repeat, once again, that we wholeheartedly with you and pray for you night and day.

It can already be said that regardless of the military outcome, Iraq has won a sweeping victory over the forces of aggression, thanks to its courageous stance and staunch resistance.

I will conclude with a verse from the Holy Quran: "Soon will we show them Our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?"

Perhaps what they call today "the end" is actually the "beginning" and what they term as "post-war" is but the continuation of the same war throughout the world, for indeed we have entered an era of civilizational confrontation between the West and Third World countries.

The confrontation will go on, under a variety of forms for at least the 15 to 20 years to come. The West has taken action against Iraq because the latter is the sole Third World country which has had the guts to say "no" to imperialism and Zionism.

These are no more than neo-Crusades, but God will stand by those who are patient. May He make the just cause of the Iraqi people prevail!
